If resting directly onto a paua shell, the shell will not be affected. Although, the shell will get very hot, and could burn your hand! Therefore, put shell on heat- proof surface first.

Preferably, hold stick to waft smoke around each room, including the corners, windows, and doorways. Suitable fire-proof dish dishes to hold sticks are cauldrons and paua shells.
